Make Back-to-School Easier with School Supply Social Stories

If you’ve ever watched a kindergartener glue an entire worksheet to their desk, you know that teaching school supply routines is no small task. 😅 The beginning of the school year is full of excitement—but also chaos—as our little learners get used to classroom tools, routines, and expectations.

That’s where School Supply Social Stories come in!

These simple, visual stories are one of my favorite ways to teach the how and why behind using school supplies the right way. Whether you’re introducing scissors, crayons, glue, or pencils, a good social story can set the tone for the rest of the year.

Why Use Social Stories for School Supplies?

Social stories aren’t just for behavior—they’re perfect for teaching classroom procedures and school supply rules in a way young learners can understand.

They work because they:

  • Break down routines step-by-step

  • Use kid-friendly language and visuals

  • Reinforce positive behavior and expectations

When I started using them, I noticed fewer supply-related meltdowns and way more independence during work time. Students felt confident because they knew what to do—and I didn’t have to repeat myself a hundred times a day.

What’s Included in the Free School Supply Social Stories?

This free printable set includes full-color, ready-to-use social stories for common classroom tools like:

  • ✂️ Scissors

  • 🖍️ Crayons

  • ✏️ Pencils

  • 🖊️ Markers
  • 🧴 Glue bottles and glue sticks

Each story walks students through how to use the item, what it’s for, and how to take care of it. You can use them during morning meetings, as part of your first-week routines, or even add them to your calm corner or supply stations for reminders throughout the year.

When and How to Use Them

The best time to introduce these stories? Right at the start of the school year. I like to take one school supply per day and pair the story with hands-on practice. For example, we’ll read the glue stick story and then practice “just a dot, not a lot.”

They also make great mini-lessons during:

  • The first week of school

  • Small group expectations

  • Supply centers

  • Behavior reminders later in the year
